Dhokra Metal Art
Dhokra is one of the oldest traditional techniques of metal casting in India, dating back over 4,000 years to the Indus Valley Civilization.
Practiced by tribal artisans across states like West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand, this art form uses the ancient lost-wax casting technique (cire perdue) to create stunning non-ferrous metal figurines from brass and bronze.
Key Features of Dhokra Art
Completely Handcrafted: No two Dhokra pieces are ever identical. Because the clay mold must be broken to retrieve the finished product, every single creation is a unique masterpiece.
Rustic, Antique Aesthetic: Characterized by its warm, golden-brass finish, often accented with natural patinas, dark oxidation, or a verdigris green.
Intricate Wirework: Artisans wrap fine wax threads around a clay core to create the distinctive, textured mesh patterns and spiral details characteristic of the style.
Traditional Motifs: Designs are heavily inspired by nature, folklore, and tribal life, commonly featuring deities, animals (like elephants, horses, and bulls), and everyday rustic scenes.
